For day 7 of our trip, we visited Benowo landfill, TPS 3R Jambangan, and did workshops hosted by Carbon Addons. It was a unique full day programme that allowed us to learn more about sustainability and waste management.
To start off our day, we visited Benowo landfill. Since going to a landfill was a first for many of us, we were all looking forward to the experience. Before we could visit the landfill, we were made to put on safety helmets and vests. Upon entering, we were greeted by a mountain of waste. The guides then explained the process of turning this waste into energy through gasification, which is an eco-friendly technology.
After visiting the landfill, we made our way to TPS 3R Jambangan. When we stepped inside, we immediately got a whiff of the strong smell coming from piles of compost. We also saw workers manually sorting through waste, before using a press machine to compress the organic waste for composting. In Jambangan, we learnt that layering is used during composting, maggots and black soldier flies are used for decomposing waste, and we even saw methane gas coming out of the compost piles!

After lunch, we attended two sustainability workshops prepared by Carbon Addons. The first workshop was the making of an eco-bracelet using recycled bottle caps as beads. During this workshop, we also were able to calculate our carbon footprint through the effective Carbon Addons’ calculator.
The second workshop required us to create innovative solutions for sustainability challenges. We had lots of fun attending these workshops as through them, we got to practice our design thinking skills and learn about sustainable methods that we can incorporate in our lives.

Through this engaging programme, we got to reflect on the impact of our everyday actions on our climate. We will do our best to play our part in managing our waste in order to ensure a more sustainable earth for everyone to live on.
Look forward to our last entry tomorrow as we make our way back to Singapore to all of you soon!
